The Performance — 36 x 48 in — Lisbon Studio

The musicians play on one side; their listeners settle on the other. Red holds the performers, while blue and muted green gather around an audience of elegant postures, glasses, and tables. Everyone shares the room. They do not necessarily share the same evening.

The Performance considers the musical chemistry, and the distance, between players and listeners on a wealthy cruise. The composition keeps both groups in view, allowing the music to be imagined in the space between them.

The pleasure of listening is present, but so is the separation between the people providing it and those receiving it. Sound can cross a room with remarkable ease. The other distances are less cooperative.
