The newspaper has become part of the man. It crosses his chest where we might expect a shirt, filling the figure with other people’s words. Around him, pink, pale green, and blue hold their own fragments of writing.
Opinionated Man belongs to a series of small Introspection paintings I developed using live figure models in Oak Park, Illinois, working on mixed-media surfaces. Looking at the body became a way of asking what else goes into making a person: the things we read, repeat, absorb, and eventually mistake for entirely our own thoughts.
The face remains unresolved, but the printed convictions have arrived fully formed. There is something gently uncomfortable in that imbalance. A portrait can tell us what someone looks like; here, the papers begin to suggest what they have been taking in.
About the artist
Satish Prabhu brings travel, reading, and everyday encounters into a practice of reconstruction. Figures, interiors, and familiar objects become ways to explore memory, belonging, and the distance between people. This is an original, artist-created work, not an AI-generated image.
