The figure did not arrive on a smooth, obedient surface. I began with loose canvas, crumpling it and working with spray paint. Its folds and edges suggested a body; the figure emerged through what the material had already done.
This larger Introspection painting returns to the earlier Opinionated Man, but the process changes the encounter. Yellow, pink, turquoise, and violet move across the torso, while the dark ground holds traces of the disturbed surface. The gaze is calmer than the restless color might suggest, leaving the character’s inner life open rather than fixing it into a single expression.
Pessoa, writing as Ricardo Reis, offers a useful companion to this meeting of fragments and presence. The lines below are a way of sitting with the finished work, not a claim about what originally inspired it.
Sê todo em cada coisa. Põe quanto és
No mínimo que fazes.
Be whole in each thing. Put all that you are into the smallest thing you do. (English rendering.)
Fernando Pessoa, writing as Ricardo Reis, from Para ser grande, sê inteiro, 1933.
