A small chair waits in a room assembled from remembered things. Flowers, shutters, a fireplace, and fragments of pattern give the interior its bearings. Lavender and turquoise soften the geometry. Yellow has other plans.
The painting began with a visit to a Midwestern estate sale and a Stickley chair. In such rooms, ordinary objects arrive with lives still attached to them, even when those lives are no longer there to explain themselves. I did not want to document the house so much as hold that unsettled feeling of entering someone else’s memories.
Postcards and letters collected in Chicago’s markets helped shape the colors and textures. These fragments became part of the painting’s language, bringing small traces of other lives into a room that is both familiar and reconstructed. The chair remains furniture. It is also a place for the imagination to sit.
About the artist
Satish Prabhu brings travel, reading, and everyday encounters into a practice of reconstruction. Figures, interiors, and familiar objects become ways to explore memory, belonging, and the distance between people. This is an original, artist-created work, not an AI-generated image.
