I painted Tangier before I walked its streets. This work began with two painters I admire: Van Gogh and Matisse. I brought Van Gogh’s The Yellow House into conversation with Matisse’s Tangier, reconstructing a place through paintings long before I could encounter it for myself.
Years later, I visited Tangier and followed Matisse’s footsteps. The journey came after the painting, reversing the usual order of things. First I had worked through another painter’s vision of the city; then I could stand there and look for myself.
The painting holds that earlier meeting of influences, when looking at art was already a way of travelling. Arles belonged to the other half of the story: in the account behind this work, The Yellow House was still a visit yet to be made.
