Curator's Note

There are paintings that document a moment, and there are paintings that collapse time itself. The Cleaning Lady belongs to the second category.

The work originates from a discovery made in one of Paris's legendary secret passages — those glass-roofed 19th-century arcades that still shelter antique dealers, rare booksellers, and the accumulated memory of another era. Among the ephemera in one such shop, Satish Prabhu found an antique postcard: a photograph of a cleaning lady at work in colonial India, her gaze directed elsewhere, entirely unaware of the camera. The image had already travelled more than 150 years to reach him.

What followed was not a reproduction but a resurrection. Working in a signature style developed over years of artistic discovery — a technique so distinctive it has been applied to only one other work, The Moroccan Snake Charmer — Prabhu reconstructed the image using vibrant mixed media, layering colour, texture, and gesture over the photographic memory until something entirely new emerged. The palette is his own invention: warm, saturated, alive in a way that the original photograph could never be.

Five People in One Frame

What makes this work exceptional is its layered humanity. The painting holds five distinct presences simultaneously: the cleaning lady herself, absorbed in her work; the unknown photographer who captured her; the people who sent and received this postcard across continents; the artist who found it a century and a half later; and you, the viewer, who completes the chain.

The subject — a woman cleaning vases in a wealthy household, her mind clearly elsewhere — could never have imagined her image travelling this far, or being seen this way. That gap between her oblivion and our attention is where the painting lives. It is a meditation on the power of a single captured moment, on what survives, and on who gets to be remembered.

Provenance & Living History

This is Satish Prabhu's flagship painting — the work he considers the fullest expression of his signature style. It currently hangs in a private rental accommodation, where guests have consistently responded to its presence, describing it as the defining object in the space. It is a painting that changes a room.

Only two works exist in this style. Acquiring The Cleaning Lady is acquiring the original — the work from which the language of this body of art was first spoken.
